So recently Ethan absolutely loves his soother (or "Suzie" as we call it)…
and it is very strange to me.
This is why…
When Ethan was a week old I introduced him to the soother.
He took to it right away and loved it…Well for the first three months anyways.
To tell you the truth I have to admit that the soother was a very handy
parenting tool and did the trick more often then not...
It even got to the point that the “Suzie” became a must have
when we left the house...I have vivid memories of searching high and low
for the Suzie when it got misplaced...We ended up buying about
four different Suzies in order to prevent the "terror"
of being stranded without one…We kept one in the diaper bag,
one in the car seat and a couple around the house just in case.
Yes we were grateful to whoever invented the Suzie!
Then all of a sudden when Ethan was three months old
he decided that he didn’t like "Suzie" anymore... He started to spit it out,
scrunch up his mouth, make a disgusted face,
or tightly pierce his lips together as he gave me this look that said
“get that foreign object out of my mouth.”
Truthfully I found it a little difficult to accept
that I could no longer turn to my trusted “Suzie”.
This behaviour towards Suzie continued for a good week...
so I gave up and assumed that the soother would RIP forever more.
Periodically over the months that followed Nathan and I
would offer the soother with no success.
Soon later I found new ways to settle Ethan and
eventually forgot about "Suzie".
Then all of a sudden…
A week ago Ethan found one of his "Suzies" amongst his toys
and plopped it in his mouth and started suckling like a pro…
he looked so comfortable with this “foreign object” in his mouth.
Needles to say I was shocked and a little confused!
Then the next day we gave Ethan Suzie again to see if yesterday was a fluke,
and he excitedly placed it in his mouth and started suckling again.
He continues to enjoy his Suzie
and again I am finding it to be a very handy parenting tool.
However now that he is a little older
and we know he is quite capable of self soothing without Suzie...
I try to limit the amount of time I give it to him...
to avoid him getting too dependent on it.
Yes I have a bit of a complex because
I was one of those addicted thumb suckers that had a tough time quitting...
Ethan would be one uncool kid if he was still suckling on his Suzie at age eleven.
I think it is safe to say we have together found a happy "Suzie" balance.
But I still find the whole thing very strange!
