Family Home Evening Activity - Family Tree

My boys just love being outside...

One of Ethan and Todd's favorite things to do is go for walks in the woods and on the train tracks...
During these outings they love to search, find and catch insects and spiders,
as well as pick up pine cones, stones, sticks, leaves and feathers...

So it is no surprise to me that Ethan comes home from school everyday
with a variety of treasures in his back pack and pockets...
Recently he has been bringing home a copious amount of pine-cones...

The other day he got off the bus with a very excited look on his face...
He was holding a little piece of wood that looked like drift wood on the beach...
He announced the second he got off the bus  "Mom you will never guess what I found"
He walked over to me all proud and handed me his treasured piece of wood...
It made me laugh inside and brought a huge mommy smile to my face!

Ethan also LOVES to do crafts...
So he will often make a craft out of the treasures he collects...
Ethan will usually paint and bedazzle his "treasures"...
So recently we have had a bunch of "beautiful" looking
pine cones, stones, nuts and wood sitting in the kitchen...

We needed to do something with them because I couldn't bear to toss his hard work...

So I had an idea for FHE

(FHE stands for Family Home Evening and is a program encouraged by our church with a purpose to help families strengthen bonds of love with each other as well as provide an atmosphere where we can grow closer to Christ - it is usually held on a Monday and will usually include prayer, scripture, lesson, activity and food...It is suppose to be a fun time to spend with the family)

Anyhow this past week...I ran my idea for FHE activity past Ethan and he got excited...
So for our activity we attached a tag & ribbon to each "treasure"...
On the tag Nathan recorded each family members name on one side and
then on the other side we asked the kids to tell us something special about the person...
Ethan wanted us to write "I love them" on almost all of them...

Then I wrapped some ribbon around the bedazzled "treasures"
and the kids took turns running outside and hanging them on the tree beside our front porch...
(However most of them made it on the rose bush in front of the tree)

It turned out to be a really successful Family Home Evening activity...
The kids seemed to have a blast!

I just had to get a few pictures (see below)

The kids were pretty proud of their family tree

Typical outfit for Ethan...It was cold and wet outside
